300 years old plane trees in Peyrassoulat - Chéronnac
The site at Peyrassoulat has been classified a ‘Natural Zone of ecological interest, fauna and flora’ (ZNIEFF), thanks to the three hybrid plane trees from the West and one from the East, and four yew trees whose branches form a remarkable arch of greenery. One of the plane trees is listed, with branches spanning 40m and the circumference of the trunk being 6m.
The property was once a forge which ceased activity in 1920. It used to supply steel to the navy at Ruelle in the Charente. The remains of these ruins peek through the abundant vegetation, fed by the Tardoire river running below. About 400 years ago this would have been a garden where plane trees and yew trees were planted.
Forgotten over time, they made the most of the site and grew and spread for the visitor’s delight and they now form a magnificent green theatre.

Practical information
To access the site park on the side of the road and head down the track (about 100m), following the signs for « Peyrassoulat » and the private property. Access is free.
