From the Middle Ages to modern times
Sitting proudly atop a rocky promontory, Rochechouart Castle overlooks the Graine valley.
It belonged to the Vicomtes of Rochechouart for a thousand years. It is an impressive fortified building, both in the Medieval style (keep and drawbridge) and the Renaissance style (the main building and courtyard) and it has housed the Departmental Museum of Contemporary Art since 1985.
The castle contains some rare frescoes in the Hunt Room and the Heracles Gallery which had been hidden for several centuries.
Exposition d’art contemporain
Set in such wonderful surroundings the Departmental Museum of Contemporary Art is a must-see for contemporary art lovers.
As well as its contemporary collection and the Raoul Hausmann collection, the museum organises themed exhibitions dedicated to the art of today. Contemporary artists are regularly invited to design special works, several of which have been added to the collections.
The castle has a new look
A vast programme to renovate the walls and woodwork was started in March 2015 and is due to last for five years. The outside walls, the towers, and the courtyard have been rendered with lime to prevent water infiltration.

The Departemental Museum of Contemporary Art is closed on Tuesdays.
Discover the changing themed exhibitions throughout the year by making the most of the free entry on the first Sunday of the month (except July/August).
